An announcement by US President Donald Trump that anti-malaria drug chloroquine could be used to treat COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, has sent Ghanaian in Accra into panic buying of the drug.

The announcement came during Trump’s press conference on Thursday, March 19, 2020, and a few hours later, drug stores across Accra were inundated by enquiries about the drug.

“It’s shown very encouraging — very, very encouraging early results. And we’re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately,” Trump said on Thursday.

Celebritieshype visited six drug stores in Okaishie drug store lane in the business district of accra and collaborated reports from other sources across other areas of the city.

Three local drug stores in Okaishe told this website that they had sold out all brands of chloroquine while pharmaceutical stores in Lapaz, Kaneshie and Markola confirmed the increased enquiries.
