It’s often impossible to separate the legitimate business of a relative of a politician from using the clout surrounding those in power to benefit substantially in private life. This bane has been the core quagmire among the three families headed in this story.
The presidential candidate of the Democrats in the US, Joe Biden has received a lot of red flags for the past one year over his son’s lack of judgement in accepting to serve on the board of a scandal-plagued Ukrainian natural gas company named Burisma. Even though Robert Hunter Biden has knowledge in US-Ukraine policy relations, the troubled young man who was dismissed from the Army over use of cocaine, had no qualification in the field of Gas and energy but earned a whooping $50,000 a month. The position which he accepted in 2019 wasn’t a big deal in the US , since no Republican at the time raise an eyebrows. Its now become a monumental and political issue in the coming election. In fact, the name Hunter Biden will go down in history as a topic that led to the 45th president of the United States getting impeached.
What makes this Hunter Biden web a murkier one is when Joe Biden, via a consensus in the White house and Europe, advised that Ukraine’s prosecutor general, Viktor Shokin, wasn’t doing enough to crack down on corruption. Biden, as he later colorfully recounted, delivered the message that the West wanted Shokin gone or else loan guarantees would be held up, and Shokin was, in turn, fired. Though the request of Joe Biden had no relation to his son, its become an albatross on his neck that the Trump team continues to use to smear his election bid. Clearly, families of politicians needs to give others the chance.
The activities of Ivanka Trump and the sons of President Trump aren’t different from the activities of Hunter Biden. Its in fact a deeper version of the Biden’s. The Trumps are literally benefiting from the activities of their father in a state that has never happened before in the annals of a democratic governance. Whiles Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr are making monies by using their fathers private businesses for governmental activities, Ivanka Trump is racking in million dollar deals from China. This is the worse form of Conflict of Interest. Trump sons charges the secret service (father’s bodyguards) for using his hotels anytime Trump sleeps over. Last year, in the midst of her father’s trade war with China and his efforts to strike a new trade agreement between the two global superpowers, Ivanka won initial approval for 16 trademarks, and added five more to her portfolio earlier this year.
Now lets come home to Ghana. We thought we had seen the worse form of a nepotistic governance in US with Trump appointing his daughter with a slim resume as his special advisor and her son in law with no experience in international relation and Diplomacy as his representative in the solving the middle east crises until the excessive similarities with Ghana popped up.
Nana Akufo Addo won power in an election in Dec 7th of 2016. The then NPP candidate who touted that he was never coming to reside over a family and friends government , did exactly that. Literally from the cleaners in the flagstaff house, through his offices to the finance ministry had signs of families, friends and relations littered everywhere. The new venture of the president saw wives and concubines of relations heading boards and ambassadorial roles. Then we have the famous Trio. The three daughters of the president. Just like Hunter Biden and the Trumps, these women seems to be benefiting immensely from their fathers presidency. After putting one at the Creative Arts Council, the three , Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, Valerie Obaze and Edwina Akufo-Addo set up the My Sisters Keeper foundation right after their father was made president, . The foundation which is just like many NGOs is nothing but a vehicle to make money and do some charity work.
In an expose’ on UTV, Messrs Sammy Gyamfi, the communication officer of the NDC revealed that the Three Children of the president used their connection with the presidency to lobby a whooping GHC227,000 from the Ghana Commercial Bank , something that would definitely be hard for other establishments. According to the NDC officer, this was the only expose’ he had discovered and there could be more in the dark or undiscovered.
The foundation of the first lady also made huge sums of money from the GNPC.
Seems democracy has started rearing heads of nepotism and conflict of interest in the 21st century. Nepotism has been accepted and families of politicians trading on their names and position for financial gains. Nothing separates the American situation to the Ghanaian cancer.
