American wrestling superstar turn actor, John Cena has apologized to the people of china for an innocent mistake he made by referring the island of Taiwan as a country.
The movie star who was speaking in mandarin in an interview to promote his latest movie, Fast and Furious 9 said ” Taiwan is the first country you can watch this movie(F&F9) “.
This reference of Taiwan has a country caused a platitudes of backlash and boycott by the people of China for the lastest Fast and Furious franchise.
China believes the island of Taiwan is part of China and both countries have been on tension since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. Beijing has over the years tried to limit the influences of Taiwan in the Pacific region.
With China being the country that led the Fast and Furious franchise in becoming one of the highest earn franchise, the American had to apologise for his mistake.
On Tuesday, Mr Cena posted a video on the Chinese social media site Weibo, apologising for the “mistake”.
“I made one mistake, I must say right now, very important, I love and respect Chinese people,” he says, in Chinese. “I am very sorry for my mistake. I am so sorry, I apologise.”
His apology however didn’t sit well with the Chinese people with some saying “”Please say ‘Taiwan is part of China’ in Chinese, otherwise we will not accept,” on Weibo (Chinese popular social media).
